. the republican candidate in virginia for governor we through a scalding campaign because of what he'd written as a student and all that have was sort of revived during that. so he has a fair point this ought to be, both candidates ought to be revived. but my point here is on christine o'donnell, i think the reason why she's now, she's burst into the spotlight as the the woman who probably cost the republicans their chance at winning the senate. she is going to certainly contribute to a fear among republicans about crossing lines and working with democrats as mike castle did. voting for cap and trade, as he did, and have that bring him down sends a very big signal that it's going to be extremely hard to govern and form bipartisan majorities no matter who wins in these elections. and finally, this election with her, you know, is probably going to drive or draw a lot of the republican candidates for president, you know this, draw them to the right. we're going to -- mitt romney was described in the financial times today as the guy who really lost tuesday night because he's too moderate. mitt rom

there. and then there's the very red state of west virginia. democrats of course have a very, very popular governor running in joe manshun. will they put the money in that they need to win those races. one other thing republicans have to worry about, let's take a look at our map here where the democrats are targeting a few of these republican seats. there are five here that are sitting here. and of course three of them are still seats that democrats are trying to win. you've got missouri. they're spending real money there. they really think robin carnahan can beat, we'll see, not quite sure but it is a red state but it is a red state that robin carnahan very popular, raised a ton of money. kentucky, the first tea party victory was rand paul. democrats still believe that he is too weak to win that seat. we shall see. he's been leading in all the polls. jack conway has yet to be able to take a lead there. the third seat that's sort of sitting there ends up being florida. we're going to close there. take a look at this, what charlie crist said yesterday. he's now the independent, that

's a couple more seats, though, that could become competitive, connecticut and west virginia. they might not be considered so today but they could... if those seats become competitive as we get closer to the election then we know the tidal wave that people have talked about is really emerging and the republicans could take both houses. >> rose: vin weber former congressman now washington power figure. mark halperin, a national political power figure, senior political analyst for "time" magazine, coauthor of "game change" which at some point in our lives will be in paper back if not already. is it already, mark, or not? >> no, sir. late october i'll come visit you. >> rose: late october. we'll see you then. >> rose: we're in london with angela ahrendts. she's the c.e.o. of burberry. she's seen the transformation of the 154-year-old company into an international fashion powerhouse. she grew up in a small town in indiana. she sewed her own clothes and dreamed about a life in fashion. she has fulfilled that dream once associated with the classic trench coat burberry now sells everything from

is there, outside of d.c., sterling, virginia, this morning. a lot of what's in the pledge seems to be classic republican ideas that we've heard for some time now, years, as a meat of fact, anything new in here? >> reporter: well, i think what's new and what's most interesting is the way that house republicans are trying to make the tea parties voters, especially understand that they are trying to listen to them. i think we have some examples of points that i saw were clear indications that they were trying to reach out. little things. for example, weekly votes on spending cuts. a pledge to cut congress's budget. a net hiring freeze of nonsecurity federal employees. and a vote on every regulation costing more than $100 million. those, each of those, is a nod to the idea that many in the base, you know, you hear republicans talking about this rebellion. rebellion is in large part about spending. so these are little things that the house republicans say they will try to do to address that. in addition to that there are some items in here that address the whole idea at that governme

of west virginia, he wants to be a democratic senator, just yesterday, he came out and said tax cuts should be held in place. he joins people like joe lieberman, ben nelson of nebraska, bill nelson of florida, jim webb of virginia, all these are moderate democrats. how do you buck that trend when these people are drib ling out by the day? >> you're exactly right, bill. if the conservative -- the conservative democrats are worried, they understand that what's been driving this conversation for the longest time has been that the white house has not been paying sufficient attention to the economy, that the unemployment numbers remain high, and that most americans are pessimistic about what the future holds, and this is everything from the tax hike to the decifit. but for the moment, what we saw last week was the president going on the offensive and saying where are the ideas, where is the help coming from with republicans and the white house has forced congressman boehner to say he would agree to tax cuts even if it meant the tax cuts for the rich weren't coming through. that as you kno

with an impressive track record of predicting such trends. director of the university of virginia politics and joins from us charlottesville. good to see you this morning. let's talk about what you got in your crystal ball. you are talking about essentially a gop takeover of the congress or very, very close to it. in the senate eight to nine gop seats is what larry is predicting in his crystal ball. pickup of 47 seats in the house for republicans, governor's races could swing eight of those seats to the gop side. all in all, pretty impressive election result there if all of that pans out. how did you come to these conclusions. you know, we are hearing that a lot these days. you know, forecasts are coming out. how do you get to those conclusions? >> jim, of course, we studied every race just about every day. this is our job. and we look for lots of different indicators. generic ballot, democrat versus republican. presidential popularity, state of the economy, and the strength of individual candidates, there are so many factors that go into each thing. look, jim, you have been around a long time. you

a lot to actually gallon virginia nice the left. in fact yesterday at a chamber luncheon in anchorage, berkowitz reached out and endorsed her. the folk that are coming around here are not perceived as conservative, but they have policies of the past rather than recognizing the situation we are in right now. jenna: let's talk a little bit about the two party system. you've called yourself a constitutional conservative. do you believe the way the government is running right now with the two party system is the way that the founders intended it to run or is this country at a political crossroads today. >> it's at a political crossroads in the sense that this nation as a whole, not only here in ask but in many other states week nicest that we cannot go forward with the system we have in great, growing government, growing fiscal debts that are making the country financially. and it is time for one of the parties, and i think that is best placed in the republican party to catch that understanding and put into effect a system that reverses the growth of government. it's an opportunity to skh

in virginia closing three years after the fed starts moving to phase out light bulbs, ordering government buildings to use fluorescent bulbs to save energy. my next guest thinks that the plan backfired and people are going to lose their jobs from this factory. it's congressman joe barton. this caught our eye. it encapsulate as number of issues out there right now. why are you fighting to save the indan des -- incandescent light bulb? >> they're cheaper, environmentally correct and we think consumers ought to make the correct choice, especially middle and low income americans, they can't afford four, $5 light bulbs when you can get the old fashioned light bulb for 40, 50 cents a pop. martha: but part of the action is to say that the government won't purchase incandescent light bulbs nip. it doesn't mean the rest of us can't. >> it also says it can't be sold as retail in the united states. martha: they can't be sold anywhere after -- when is this going to go into effect? >> 2014. so we want to repeal it. this is indicative of the overreach that the obama administration, mrs. pelosi and majo

for politics at the university of virginia and joins me, good to have you here. i want to play for folks who tuned in with the interview with christine o'donnell, and i wanted your thoughts on that race. >> my opponent has a liberal record that does not resonate with the people and had to resort to dirty true u-tricks and mud slinging but i'm confidents, the polls reflect the voters are seeing right through it. martha: what are the polls telling you about the race. >> it is very, very close, and the republicans face a conundrum in delaware, tomorrow night. essentially, their choice is this: they can pick christine o'donnell with whom i think they agree on more issues, she's clearly more conservative, than the other candidate, congressman mike castle, who is a moderate to liberal republican, and the problem is, delaware is a democratic state. and, every poll i have seen, public and private, suggests that mike castle will win the seat in november, defeating democrat chris kuhns, and christine o'donnell will probably lose the seat in november and it is a conundrum, do you go with the candidate

of virginia is the house minority whip. kevin mccarthy of california is deputy whip, and paul ryan of wisconsin is the ranking member on the house budget committee, and together they have written a new book "the young guns, a new generation of conservative leaders." good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> before i get to the belle book, i want to talk about the delaware primary. kelly just pointed on social issues that may not sit well with swing voters. castle has said if o'donnell wins today, this primary, then the republicans will lose the seat in november. eric, do you agree with that? >> meredith, what's going on now across the country is obviously people are very upset with washington. they're tired of politicians who make promise that is they just can't keep. so we are seeing across the country some very active primaries. you know, what we have done here is we have gotten together a couple of years ago and we put together an effort inรง search candidates who could actually respond to that very issue. >> do you agree with castle that if o'donnell wins that, in fact,

this area was founded in 1609 by sailors trying to get to virginia, and they settled here. i can tell you from 1609 to present day they know how to handle these tropical systems. they were well prepared, they were willing to accept the damage from the tree, the roof damage and the shattered windows, blocked roadways. it goes with the territory, so to speak. some of the flooding that we had along the coastline is caused by some of the nine to 12-foot waves that pushed by the wind you're going to have that. that's water is now since receded which is good news. there are other issues in terms of the main causeway in bermuda. that's shut. the airport is closed. when the winds subside, what they will do is take a team of engineers out by the causeway and check fort structural damage. if it appears sound, they will open it back up. and hopefully thereafter the airport. >> reynolds wolf doing yeoman's service in bermuda. >>> sarah shourd who spent more than a year in prison is back on u.s. soul but her heart is in iran. >> her fiance and friend are being held accused by the iranian government of

are going to unveil tomorrow in virginia sort of their blueprint, their game plan, what they're going to do if they take control of congress. there's going to be a couple nods to the tea party movement in that platform that's unveiled tomorrow. they recognize this is a powerful group that will help propel them into power certainly in the house. >> and the thing is, again, this tea party movement is so much like the pro movement. for some reason you bring that up and people are always, no, no, it's worse. but the perot people were talking about the same thing, limited government, the constituti constitution, didn't want excessive engagement overseas. that's where sarah palin splits from the tea party. tea party are a lot like ron paul and pat buchanan and the perot people. they don't think we should be fighting wars all over the world. i'm in one accord for them. you can't be for small government at home and be for massive intervention overseas. sarah palin, i don't know that there's a war that's been fought over the past 20 years that sarah palin didn't like. >> if you spend any time at all

. >> and president obama held a discussion in the home of falls church, virginia, but he strayed off topic to talk to the crowd about a question he often faces about how he manages stress. >> people ask me, sort of how do i stay calm in my job. the reason i stay calm in my job is that every night at 6:30 no matter how busy i am, i go upstairs and i have a short commute, and i go upstairs and i have dinner with my wife and my daughters. and as long as they are doing good, as long as they are healthy and happy and running around and telling me stories about the crazy things that happened at school today, then there is a certain baseline that just gives you that sense, well, i can take anything, right? now, the flipside is when malia or sasha get a sniffle or an ear infection or a scrape or a bruise, i'm over there just miserable. >> dinner with the family helps anyone out, i would say, with stress. speaking of dinner, wolf, any dinner plans with mr. trump this evening for you? >> no dinner plans. i am getting on the plane to fly back on the shuttle. i will be back -- >> we miss you. >> i think that

in virginia where he was taking questions on the economy. >> they should definitely get an extension of the tax cuts that were instituted in 2001-2003. we could get that done this week. but we're still in this wrestling match with john boehner and mitch mcconnell about the last 2-3% where on average, weighed be giving them $100,000 for people making a million dollar or more. >> a chief medicare specialist is criticizing the obama's administration's projections on the effects of the health care overhaul predicting it will save less money than supporters have argued. in addition, he says numbers provided on a white house blog last week that indicates spending per insured person will be $1,000 lower in the year 2019 because of the law are in fact not quote meaningful or accurate. >>> and the u.s. government says it will not pay the prison bail for american higher sarah shourd, who iran says it will release on health grounds in exchange for $500,000. earlier yesterday, shourd's family asked to have the bail reduced, saying they couldn't afford it. we'll follow that. tony blair, next on "

did in virginia, massachusetts and new jersey. >> don't forget the olympics. he came up zero on all those things. here's a guy who lied about his military service and he will be honored essentially by the inclusion of the commander in chief in private, not going to be in public. >> unlike the other ones, he said give me a hug, jon corzine, get over here, i'm going to -- >> pose for this picture. >> raising money for the connecticut, for the democratic party in connecticut and now it's for blumenthal in particular to try to get some money behind him. >> let's talk about what's going on in pennsylvania with the homeland security list. you know what that is. that's for terrorists, right? supposed terrorists with the e potential to blow up buildings and airplanes, apparently the people who ended up on the war for anti-tax people, right? >> right. >> people against taxes. how would that happen? >> in particular, that fella right there and gene stilt is the fella who travels around to different events on the capital area of pennsylvania with a 25 foot high inflatable pig. >> right. >>

. the old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs like this little one, they're closing a big plant in virginia, 200 jobs, $30 an hour jobs. they're going to china. 2007, the democrat congress says we've got to save energy and save the planet. global warming is coming. so we've got to get rid of those old incandescent light bulbs and go to the next compact fluorescent lights, etc., etc., they are made in china. now you're seeing the results of it. >> those crazy little pigtail lights, the cfl's they want you to buy at home depot and stuff like that. we've heard such a big push from the manufacturers. you got to use these because they're good for the environment. what's ironic, stuart, is the fact that u.s. scientists invented the cfl light and now what we've done is we've exported all the jobs to china! >> yes, these 200 jobs go straight to china. now, the president -- >> used to be a lot more. remember back in the days when the united states of america used to make stuff! now we don't make anything. >> right. manufacturing jobs down 40% since 1979. jobs like this one. now, the president is go

do tuesday's primary results mean for democrats? former virginia governor tim kaine is the chairman of the democratic national committee. governor kaine, good morning to you. >> good to be with you, meredith. >> good to have you here. christine o'donnell wins in delaware and it is the democrats who are grinning ear to ear, in part because so many analysts say she cannot win a general election. what does her win mean for the democratic party? >> i think that's part of it. that we have a chance to win a race that was going to be extremely difficult for us to win, and now we feel like we have a super chance to win with chris coons. the other thing i think it shows is the deep civil war that's going on in the republican party. i think the message is, moderates aren't welcome. moderates keep out. mike castle, a classic moderate republican who had been governor and a nine-term congressman rejected, that means the moderate and independent voters are going to have to look really hard -- >> or it shows that you are underestimating the tea party and tea party candidates? >> well, we're going

fundraising dinner. the former chairman of virginia's democratic party writes about her this morning in "the washington post," says sarah palin saved the g.o.p. here how he concludes -- palin started as tonto, but became the lone ranger. she runs mains strong and stood by her party. she's become a bridge between the old republican guard and the growing right-wing dissatisfaction, not just about democrats, but also with republican office holders. palin's ability to advocate for using the g.o.p., not a third party to channel this angst has allowed republican voter anger to boil, yet not boil over. should republicans run up the score in november, sarah palin will deserve a lot of credit she will never get. guest: i don't know whether she'll get it, but i think that's a very accurate assessment. i think palin has been great. she's been a dynamo. she has advocated for conservative principles unapologetically. when they tried to beat her down, she bounces right back, and she's right back in her faces, and she set an example. and really, do you realize what it's like to have the entire media machin
